PRODUCT INFORMATION
ORIGINAL BEANS CHOCOLATE WITH CACAO FROM SELVA ZOQUE MEXICO
SELVA ZOQUE CACAO
The Tabasqueño bean is the wild hybrid of an ancient criollo cacao from the time of the Olmecs, and an amelonado cacao brought to the coast of Tabasco in the early 1900s. In this bean you’ll enjoy tropical aromas of lychee and coconut – it is a map of flavours leading to the ancient traditions of the Zoque and Tzotzil peoples.
THE SELVA ZOQUE
The deep green ranges of Selva Zoque are considered the birthplace of chocolate, with cacao cultivation taking place here uninterrupted for over 4,000 years. The forefathers of the Zoque tribe who live here – the Olmecs – invented a powerful sacred drink from forest fruit known as ‘kakaw.’
SUPPORTING LOCAL FARMERS & ECOLOGY
A direct-trade supply chain has been established to raise the local cacao price and convert cattle land back into traditional gardens, where cacao can be planted among other crops and tree species. As the Zoque and Tzotzil farmers make a better living, they support the conservation of endangered animals and 1,200 hectares of rainforest.
