Virunga is one of the most beautiful and naturally richest regions in the world, in addition to being home to Africa’s oldest nature park. Sadly, its unique geology has been a focal point for centuries of resource exploitation, and resultingly has become an emblem for the struggle to defend the beauty of nature against powerful external interests.

In 2008, Original Beans kicked off a partnership with a few hundred women to grow cocoa and achieve a direct trade price premium. The community leadership of these Femmes de Virunga helps bring prosperity to the region. They have planted more than a quarter of a million cacao trees and forty thousand shade trees.
